You may have tried asana classes, and found them a brilliant way to exercise. But even the way you practice asanas can be taken to another level! Come and feel the energy of a classical hatha yoga practice. You will hold postures for up to several minutes to get the deep physical and mental benefits. We open windows for fresh air, as the quality of air that we breathe during a hatha yoga session determines the amount of energy we can extract from the atmosphere, the most important energy source. The focus is on long, slow breathing and turning the mind inward. Once learned, the practice is very dynamic and vigorous, as well as meditative.
Aside from the asanas, you will practice a substantial session of special breathing techniques to maximize your energy uptake. After each posture, there is a period of relaxation, which allows you to recover and eliminate fatigue. Periods of exertion, followed by relaxation, train you to relax throughout the day.
Our small class size allows teachers to guide you at every step. Our teachers learn the practice in a traditional ashram, where they learn and practice all aspects of a classical yoga lifestyle, and then we continue to guide them. Teachers are trained not to practice with the students, but to observe and correct, so you can learn the routines flawlessly, and practice at home.
And after recharging you with abundant health and vigor, our classes lead you into meditation, for peace, clarity and new awareness of life in harmony with yourself, others, and nature. In addition to our drop-in Hatha yoga classes, we offer step-by-step Hatha yoga courses for beginner to advanced levels, which include theory and practice. We also offer group meditation, chanting (Kirtan), philosophy, beautiful retreats in nature, yoga teacher training, and advanced courses for teachers worldwide. As a non-profit, volunteer-based spiritual community, the International Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centers offer the opportunity for you to do meaningful community service as well.
New to yoga? Take our beginner courses which lead you through the practice, and give you a deeper understanding of yoga theory. We also have beginner level drop-in classes several times a week for your convenience. These classes last one hour, giving you a focus on the fundamentals. You will learn a simple, gentle yoga routine, which can be practiced at home for any amount of time.
